Vancouver to Mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway

After my wonderful visit with my friend Dia in Vancouver, it was time to head north again. I was sad to see her leave but excited to continue my adventure.

My first stop was at the last rainforest I would see until I reached the Alaskan coast. I hiked a beautiful trail. It was a somewhat steep trail, but the payoff at the end of was totally worth it.

Flood Falls is extremely tall – 1200 feet!!! Of course, that height of falls is impossible to photograph. But I did get about 200 feet of the falls in a photo.

Of course, Maddie had a blast. She is really starting to like getting wet. She was happy playing with her stick in the water.

I really liked this more intimate shot of the falls.

After leaving the falls, I quickly realized my drive north will be all uphill – literally. My route followed the Fraser River – and this river is massive!

I saw many types of geology along my way. One interesting feature I saw was these interesting basalt columns.

Another feature I came across was this hillside that has been totally eroded away by avalanches.

And then I did more climbing!

I camped at a location that was at the end of a very deep canyon. The views were beautiful and the location so peaceful. I had a wonderful hike in the forest in the morning before heading north once again.

I just couldn’t believe how I have driven 1000 miles and climbed the entire distance. I climbed from sea level to 4200 feet. It definitely cost a lot in gas!

One of my favorite camp sites was at a small unnamed lake – more like a large pond. But I was in the woods with a lakefront campsite, and I was all by myself. I loved it so much, that I stayed two nights. It was great hiking in the woods and along the shore of the lake.

Maddie really liked the lake. I think this was her first time experiencing water that didn’t have waves. She got a lot more courage to go out deeper in the water.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that Maddie likes to choose bigger sticks these days. She seems to find it entertaining to carry a four-foot stick. Silly girl!

I made it to the highest point of my drive and the glacial lake view was amazing.

After many days of driving, I finally made it to Dawson Creek BC. The home of Mile 0 of the Alaskan Highway!

I was so excited to finally get to this milestone!!!

While staying in Dawson Creek, I toured a pioneer village that had saved a lot of homes and treasures from the 1930s. It was a pleasant way to spend a rainy morning.

I also walked a nature trail that wended its way through the town. It was a great way for Maddie and I to stretch our legs before continuing on our adventure.

It has been a wonderful trip so far! So many interesting and beautiful places to see. My next post will be from Mile 0 to the Alaskan border!
